Class Description
Gibraltar Leadership Academy’s first ever Eid Market, open to the entire community! While you explore a variety of vendors, have your children learn a skill or create a new piece of art in our exciting line-up of workshops. Each workshop is offered only once, and has limited capacity. Book now to reserve your spot!
This is a drop-off program, and each room will have one-to-one support for those that require it. If your child requires one-to-one support, please indicate this in the checkbox questions at checkout. Please Note: this accommodation is specific to children with accessibility needs.
Fri Mar 29 | 3-4:30PM | Awaiting the Eid Crescent: A 3D Printing Workshop | Ages 10-13* | $25

Celebrate the spirit of Eid as we await the crescent moon with this exclusive 3D printing workshop! Students will learn about and use TinkerCAD to craft their own moon and star shaped candle holders, blending tradition with modern design tools to illuminate your Eid celebrations. They will also explore the inner workings of a real 3D printer, and take home a 3D printed moon or star candle holder with them.

Illuminate your Eid with this introductory circuits and light-up card making workshop! Students will learn about how circuits work, components of circuit design, and use them to create their own light-up greeting cards to share with family and friends on Eid.

Explore the intersection of Islamic tradition and technology in this coding workshop! Using block-based coding in Scratch, students will develop and explore intricate geometric patterns that have adorned much of the Islamic world for centuries. Students will be able to print out these creations to create math-inspired custom colouring sheets to take home.

Join us for an exciting Eid painting workshop! Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, this workshop welcomes everyone from different paint levels. In this workshop, you will get to immerse yourself in the world of Islamic art and painting as we guide you through the steps to create your own masterpiece. Let your imagination soar as you explore vibrant colours and intricate designs, all while enjoying a fun and engaging atmosphere!

Learn the art of knotting while designing unique tassel keychains to adorn your belongings with minimalist, festive flair. In this hands-on workshop, students will create custom keychains to take home, using the traditional art of macrame which is believed to have originated with 13th-century Arab weavers.

Enjoy a fun painting activity, express your inner creativity, and take home a beautiful canvas! In this workshop students will create their own Eid themed Arabic calligraphy canvas.
Sun Mar 31 | 5-6:30PM | Need for Speed: Eid Edition – A Robotics Gaming Workshop | Ages 7-13* | $20
Instructor: Afifa Saleem (Engineer, Educator & Art Enthusiast, @avfefecreates)
Experience the thrill of robotics with this Eid-themed, engineering workshop. In teams, students will use block-based coding to program their robots to compete in delivering Eid gifts & food to all the residents of Muslimville in as little time as possible. This obstacle-style design challenge will test students’ resilience while equipping them with a new skill in coding & robotics.

Sat Mar 30 | 2:00PM | Interactive Storytime with Mehreen Akhter | Ages 4+
Mehreen creates books to nourish and encourage creativity in the little minds of young kids. Through her stories, she aims to inspire and foster a love of reading. With a passion for sharing her love of storytelling, Mehreen’s work hopes to spark the imaginations of children everywhere. ***Payment for this service will be required upon arrival.***

About the Instructors
Afifa Saleem – Afifa is a biomedical engineer and holds a BASc in Engineering Science and MASc in Biomedical Engineering, both from the University of Toronto. During and after her engineering education, Afifa was a key player in establishing numerous engineering outreach initiatives with the University of Toronto’s Outreach Office, namely the Jr. DEEP Coding program in 2016, Launch in 2018 and Blueprint in 2020. In 2015, with her colleagues and support from Google, Afifa co-founded the nonprofit initiative called Project Include, to bring free coding programs to youth in under-resourced neighbourhoods in Toronto. Furthermore, she has held numerous educator positions through Fountain of Youth, Outschool, Paper Inc. and Scientists in School. In her free time, Afifa explores various art & design techniques including 3D printing, laser cutting and macrame. Currently, she is building Deenward, an edtech platform to provide non-traditional learning opportunities to Muslim children. Afifa brings a fresh engineering perspective to all her classes and helps prepare students for a potential career in STEM that is intentional, self-empowering and socially conscious.
Sarah Waithe – Sarah Waithe is a multifaceted artist with roles spanning research, community engagement, and teaching. With her Master’s degree in international development, she has actively sought avenues to merge the realms of art and research, especially regarding topics like migration. Her diverse career has seen her contribute her expertise to organizations such as the Toronto Ward Museum, Nia Centre for the Arts, and Workman Arts, in addition to her role as a researcher at the Toronto Arts Foundation.
Rafia Masud – Rafia is a digital health professional holding a BSc in Life Sciences and MSc in eHealth, both from McMaster University. She had a keen interest in the arts from an early age. Throughout her undergrad, she was involved in an arts club- McMaster Arts for Seniors, facilitating arts and crafts sessions at a seniors hospital, and served as Co-President of the club in her final year. During her masters, Rafia started exploring her interest in the arts further, and took Arabic calligraphy classes. Her interest and passion for Arabic calligraphy grew from there and she continued to practise in her free time, and started to create paintings for family and friends. In 2019, she started promoting her work publically through her Instagram page ‘Calligrafia.art’. She has led many calligraphy painting workshops across the GTA with masjids, MSAs, children’s programs, and large Islamic events including Muslimfest and RIS. In her free time, Rafia works on custom Arabic calligraphy orders on canvas, wood, and digital mediums. Through her efforts, Rafia hopes to spread an appreciation of Arabic calligraphy among Muslims in the GTA and surrounding areas.
